A full frame DSLR camera a professional photographer can afford, that is what the latest Canon EOS 6D promises. This is by far the cheapest full frame DSLR camera Canon ever launched and will compete with the Nikon’s D600 which was released last September.
Canon claims, the new 6D will offer almost all the features 5D Mark 3 have. The 6D is similar to Nikon D600 in both control and dimension. But the 6D has a slimmer front-to-back profile and is lighter than Nikon D600.One of the key aspects that makes the Canon 6D stand out is the built-in Wi-Fi system and the GPS.
The Canon 6D has 20.2 MP Full frame CMOS Sensor and the resolution offered by the camera is superior. The 6D is powered by DIGIC 5+ processor which is same as that of EOS 5D. When compared with 5D Mark3, canon 6D is lighter with only 770Grams, where as the EOS 5D Mark3 weighs 860 grams. Canon 6D features an 11-point AF system, and a 3-inch LCD without touch screen. The camera is able to capture HD movies at 1080p in 24p/30p. The 6D features a wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 (or ISO 50-102400 with expansion). Unlike the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, the Canon EOS 6D doesn’t have a rating button. So images can only be assigned a score out of five via the menu.
With the Wi-Fi, you can transfer the pictures from your 6D to your PC or Smartphone. The camera also have apps designed for iOS and Android, this gives more ability to your 6D. Canon 6D also allows you to share the pictures taken with your favorite social networking sites including Facebook. With the Canon ‘Live View’ Application, you are able to change the exposure settings and focus points with your smart phones. This is a blessing to Wild life photographers and those interested in micro photography. Because you don’t need to manually adjust the camera, the app in your Smartphone does it for you.
Another interesting feature is the GPS enabled Geo-Tagging. Most Smartphones already have this feature but for a DSLR camera it is a new thing. Geo-tagging helps you to tag the location and time where a picture was taken. You can then add the photos taken into a map, a feature that is very useful to travel photographers. Even when the Camera is switched off, the onboard GPS will continue to map your real time locations. But this feature will drain your battery very quickly.
The Canon 6D only accepts SD format cards. While this makes the camera smaller, this may create extra image noise as lot of heat or recording shutting off is generated during video shooting.
Canon EOS 6D – Early Verdict
Canon EOS 6D is a decent DSLR for the average photographer, with Wi-Fi and GPS technology being the added bonuses. The 3 inch LCD without the touch screen is a disappointing feature. Without any major handling changes, you will find it pretty straightforward.
